Bigot Point: "Same-sex marriage isn't natural marriage."

Bigot Point:

"Same-sex marriage isn't natural marriage."

This was actually a new one for me. I had no idea what the term "natural marriage" meant, and at first assumed the bigots were just talking nonsense.
I am not a Catholic and am in no way an expert on Catholic law, i have gone to Catholic sources to try to understand this argument. Well it turns out "natural Marriage" is actually a thing, if your Catholic.

"Natural Marriage" in Catholic law is defined as an agreement. ;
"by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring".

So firstly its a Catholic religious law, so due to our constitution it should not be used as the Australian legal definition of marriage. It is fine and good for Catholics to treat their own marriages this way, but those of other religions, or of no religion certainly shouldn't be forced to follow another religions doctrine.

The "man and woman" part is currently in line with Australian Marriage law as of 2004. Thus "natural Marriage" would breach our constitution as much as the existing definition does. But correcting the law to include same-sex couples would not effect this Catholic definition as Catholics could continue to discriminate.

The part about Natural Marriage being "for the whole of life" sounds very Catholic in that divorce is not an option under Catholic law. This is different to Australian law which does allow for divorce. One wonders how the bigots would want to enforce this if they had the chance. Would divorced couples suddenly find them selves married again? What if they had already remarried which marriage would be enforced. Obviously the Australian constitution should protect us from this kind of law.
Indeed with divorce not being a thing, you could never get remarried if the bigots have their way and enforce this religious law.

I had no idea what "ordered by its nature" means... Some sources seem to imply that it refers to the natural sex drive, so in this context same-sex couples are allowed as their sex drives and attractions are natural.
Other sources seem to imply it simply means that the marriage must be consummated, again that would include same-sex couples.
So these bigots want to make it law that the marriage must be consummated, which at first glance doesn't seem a problem, but what about those who have problems in that area?
As far as i am aware Australian marriage law doesn't have this vague wording and doesn't require the marriage be consummated, i have certainly never heard of police watching over a honeymooning couple to ensure the deed gets done...

The term "to the good of the spouses" seems highly subjective. I certainly hope such vague language wouldn't find its way into Australian law. Who would decide what is for the good of the spouses?

So part of "natural marriage" these bigots want to enforce is the ability and requirement to procreate. This would be worrying for older Australians, those who can not procreate for medical reasons and those who simply don't want to procreate.
Current marriage laws in Australia do not require procreation.

As to education of the offspring, well does that mean they would have to be home schooled? Is home schooling really an ideal education? Does this mean only qualified teachers can be married, or is it a carry over from older times when children were not necessarily educated. So those in a "natural marriage" should be fighting for sex education in schools, fighting for their schools to adopt anti-bulling programs such as Safe Schools, and ensuring there children know that being LGBT is a natural part of human existence, right?

There are also conditions that Catholic "natural marriage" must be between only two people, that the male must be at least 16 and the female at least 14 years of age and, sorry Cory but both participants must be human.

So we have established that the Catholic "natural marriage" is not currently the same as Australian Marriage law.
We know that the current laws are discriminatory and unconstitutional.
Changing the Australian law to match the Catholic "natural marriage" definition would also be unconstitutional and discriminatory.
Changing the Australian marriage laws to make them constitutional and non-discriminatory will not effect the Catholics definition of "natural marriage" in any way, they are two separate things.

This argument is entirely disingenuous, as it implies that Australian Marriage law is currently the same as Catholic law and that marriage equality would somehow change Catholic dogma, and this is simply not the case.
Consider also the fact that not all Australians are Catholic and that the bigots want to impose specific Catholic laws on non-Catholics is very disturbing. Their argument is just as alarming as someone trying to bring about Sharia law (Islamic law) into Australia.

In my opinion Australia should remain a democracy, not a theocracy like those who use these arguments desire.

Book Review: Awkward Moments Children's Bible

 Awkward Moments

(not in your average) Children's Bible

Volume 1

Type:                                    Soft Cover

Pages:                                   80

Genre:                                  Mythology

Published:                            2013

ISBN:                                   978-1492177449

The book is about 21cm square, there is a title page with a to and from box, just in case you want to give the book as a gift. There ia a forward written by David G McAfee, most of the pages are two page painting style illustration with a biblical verse, the art work is good and does bring to mind children's bible illustrations. The book ends with information about every illustration complete with QR code, a crossword and a fill in the blanks story.

The book is clearly not a children's bible, it is however in that style. The book is a satirical look at actual things from the bible that most people do not think about or are not even aware of. As well as parts that have been removed, heavily edited, added later or are just plain silly.

My xx's mother happened to notice this book on the coffee table, she asked to look through it and i agreed. I had always thought that she was well versed in her religion, however she was adamant that even some of the well known verses shown were not in any bible.

It is always amazing to me when i realise i know more about a persons religion then they do.

One amusing issue that she was adamant about was that she claimed that Transubstantiation was only symbolic to Catholics and not literal. As much as i tried to explain, and even showed her on catholic websites that she was incorrect and that the wine was literally supposed to be blood, and the bread flesh. She still refused to believe.

She eventually had her "zinger" saying that she had actually had the communion and that it was only wine and bread she ate. I explained that that fact doesn't change that the Catholics believe it to be a literal transformation, and that i wasn't arguing that i agreed with them, just stating what they believed. I even suggested that maybe the priest was having an off day and the ritual failed that day. But she couldn't wrap her head around it sadly, just saying "it wasn't flesh though!".

While i didn't "fact check" all of the books entries, the ones i wasn't sure about did check out. I think it would undermine what the author is trying to do for them to include falsehoods, i cant see them doing it.

I can highly recommend this book for anyone who has been effected by the christian bible (that's everyone). It is a great gift for anyone who draws from the bible in their religious beliefs. It is also an enjoyable read for those who have reformed their beliefs or escaped the church.

The book itself is a good size, and is well put together. The font is not too small and not too large. There is a decent gap from the inside border so i never struggled to read on the curb. The book has good index, notes and references section in the back. My only complaint with this book is the pictures, while there are a few photos scattered thought the book, they are in black and white, this book really would have benefited from showing these gorgeous photos in full colour and perhaps full page.

This book introduces us to La Santa Muerte, it shows us that she is far more than a saint of death, being called upon for health, wealth, love, protection, wisdom, and overcoming legal problems and hmmm perhaps justice for those harmed by homewreckers.

This book shows how La Santa Muerte came from possible Aztec origins to become catholic folk saint and perhaps far more.
She has grown in popularity due to her reputed ability to act fast and powerfully to her devoted prayers.

This book delves into the religion, politics, economics and other subjects as diverse as La Muerte herself. Never dry or boring, i read this book in two sittings only stopping to perform necessary bodily functions. It really is that good.
It also contains explanations of some of her rituals and prayers, which are entirely fascinating from a Pagan perspective.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in religion, history, politics, Mexico, America, Paganism, Catholicism, The war on drugs, basically everyone should read this.

I almost forgot, she is also pro-equality, and is said to perhaps even have a special fondness for LGBTQ peoples. So she is a force for good in the world, in that regard.

I know some of you will be wondering did i contact her, is she for real?
I would advise you to read this book, see what you think for yourself.
As for me, well, i have only just reached out and so it is too soon for me to say one way or another. But it can say reading this book,  i felt she was real, real enough to see if she wanted to work with me, on a little project.
As to what she is, i am not entirely sure, i have never dealt with Saints before, nor have i worked with Aztec Deity, so i have little reference.
But you don't need to be at all meta-physically inclined to enjoy this fascinating book.

The author is chair of Catholic studies and Professor of religious studies at Virginia Commonwealth University.
His other works, that i am yet to read, include;  Competitive Spirits (2003) and Born Again In Brazil (1997).
