Congratulations to the USA for being on the right side of history.

The World Celebrates

It was a decision a long time coming, but the American High Courts have rules that all men (and wemon) are created equal. That same-sex marriage is just as important and opposite- sex marriage.

And people are celebrating. Facebook created a little app to allow users to easily add a rainbow filter to their profile picture. Sadly I couldn’t get it to work for The Drop Bear Growls page profile picture.
It makes it easy to see who supports the cause and who doesn’t, just look to the right of your Facebook page at the chat thing. Make sure to check when the person was last on, and allow for those who may not have the technical skill to click that link. Mine shows pretty much what I had suspected; none and I repeat none of the family on my Facebook changed their profile picture. After all the hate I have experienced from certain members in my family, it really does say a lot that the rest couldn’t show their support for equality with what two mouse clicks, sigh.

On to more happy things, America now has marriage equality, let’s just all stop and absorb that for a minute.

What were you doing on USAMarriage day?

Social media erupted with congratulatory posts and the internet was covered in rainbows. It was truly a proud moment, lying in bed with our tablets; my partner and I were just amazed. We slid through all the posts with smiles on our faces, occasionally showing the other one that was just too awesome to keep to ourselves. It wasn’t just the cold that kept us in bed that morning; we both wanted to sustain the moment.

The always fabulous George Takei summed the experience up with this picture.

Of course there will be dissenters, the quiet homophobes will not change their Facebook profile pictures, and the more confident bigots will post nonsenses about the fall of civilisation as we know it and gay werewolves taking over the streets at night.

But no American can ever again say that “marriage is between a man and a woman” as that has been proven wrong in the high court. If they, those who fought against clarifying the legal definition of marriage, really did care about marriage, they must now support and fight just as equally for this clarified definition of marriage or show their true colours as noisy bigots.

The repercussions in Australia are a shining light (rainbow coloured of course) of hope in the distance.

Embarrassingly our prime minister has come out saying that he hasn’t changed his opinion, I am assuming that he supports the changes to marriage that occurred in 2004, not the opinion that he wants debate on it, or that he will allow a conscience vote if he is (he was) elected. It can be difficult to determine, he says so many contradictory things.

Congratulations to the USA for being on the right side of history.
